Quick answer
Your GPA is the total grade points you earned divided by the credit hours you attempted. On the 4.0 scale each letter is worth points: A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1, and F is 0. Multiply each course grade by its credits, add those up to get grade points, then divide by the total credits. 50 grade points across 15 credits is a 3.33 GPA, sitting between a B and a B plus.

How it works

GPA = total grade points ÷ total creditsgrade points for a course = grade value (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) × its credits
total grade points
the sum of each grade value times its credits

This is an unweighted 4.0 GPA. Honors and AP courses sometimes add a point (a 5.0 scale), and some schools count pluses and minuses (A minus = 3.7, B plus = 3.3), so use your own scale if it differs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my GPA?

Multiply each course grade value by its credits to get grade points, add them all up, then divide by your total credits.

What are 50 grade points over 15 credits?

That is a 3.33 GPA, between a B and a B plus.

What grade value is an A?

On the standard 4.0 scale an A is worth 4 points, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1, and F is 0.

How do I find grade points for one course?

Multiply the grade value by the course credits. A B (3 points) in a 4 credit class is 12 grade points.

Does this handle pluses and minuses?

Not on its own. This uses whole letter values; if your school scores an A minus as 3.7, work out the grade points with those values first.
